Engaging Disadvantaged Learners and promoting Progression and Achievement

We aimed to provide innovative approaches to providing first steps learning opportunities within Skills for Life AND improved progression routes into either further education / training or employment. We aimed to developing high quality learning opportunities for learners who face multiple disadvantage and who have not previously been engaged in education or training in recent years. The majority of the learners will be economically inactive or employed in low pay, low skilled work. The  project  used the Adult Core Curriculum Documents for Language, Literacy or Numeracy as well as Access for All; made use of recognised best practice in teaching and learning within SFL, including use of the RARPA framework.

This project offered both discrete and embedded SFL within a vocationally related learning opportunity.  It supported learners through the next steps of their own personal learning journey and on going support for learners was provided for at least 6 months beyond the end of their first steps learning.

In the Thames Valley area a number of delivery sites will be identified that targets areas with large numbers of learners facing multiple disadvantages AND which is not already well served by existing or recent engagement projects. Equal importance will be placed within this project on engaging learners in high quality first steps learning in SFL AND on supporting those learners through progression into further education / training or employment.
